It has been a while since I posted a lawn care tip, but it's now coming into fall and it's time to start thinking about how to set up your lawn for success heading into next year. With that in mind, here's a fall version of a post I made in March. Reminder, aeration is a once-a-year max thing. If you did it in the spring, you're good. Personally, I prefer a fall aeration with overseed because the new grass has plenty of cool weather to help it grow before winter, instead of the occasional spring heat wave that may threaten new grass.

Fall is a great time to aerate your lawn, especially if your soil has become compacted over the summer.

Aeration pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn, creating pathways for water, oxygen, and nutrients to reach deeper into the soil.

And that matters when you're using the deep, infrequent watering method I've talked about before. With fewer compacted areas blocking the way, water can penetrate deeper into the soil, encouraging your grass roots to grow deeper and stronger instead of staying near the surface.

🌱 Aeration + overseeding can be an especially powerful combination.

The holes created by aeration give new grass seed better contact with the soil, helping it establish in thin or bare areas. A thicker, healthier lawn also leaves less room for weeds to move in and take over.

So if your lawn is looking a little thin after summer, fall is a great time to give it some attention:

🕳️ Aerate to open up compacted soil
🌾 Overseed to fill in thin areas
💧 Water deeply to encourage deeper roots
🌱 Build a thicker lawn that can better compete with weeds

One thing I learned from doing this myself: aerators are HEAVY. 😅 If you rent one, have some help available for moving it around. Your back will appreciate the advance notice.

And don't forget to mark your sprinkler heads before you start. Finding one with an aerator is a very efficient way to turn a lawn project into a plumbing project. 😂

If you haven't aerated your lawn in a while, fall might be the perfect time to give those roots some breathing room.
